The Bellingham Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers is announcing the 2015 Bellingham Salmon Derby. As part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series we are excited to once again present the Bellingham Salmon Derby. Since 2005 we have donated over $57,500 to local salmon enhancement projects.

We had a successful salmon derby in 2014 with 400 adults and 60 kids entered in the derby.  A total of 177 Chinook Salmon were weighed in.  As part of the 2014 derby we gave away over $20,000 in prizes. Our goal is to get families and kids out on the water and have fun fishing.

Proceeds from the 2014 derby were donated to several local salmon enhancement projects. $1000 was donated to each of three high schools to use towards their salmon hatchery projects: Lynden Christian High School, Blaine High School and Ferndale High School.  $3,000 was donated to Long Live The Kings, a non-profit organization located on Orcas Island is dedicated to restoring the wild salmon runs in the Pacific Northwest. $2000 was donated to Fish Northwest,  an organization promoting the Conservation and Recovery of Salmon.  $1000 to Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, an organization in Whatcom County dedicated to restoring fresh water salmon habitat. $500 was donated to the “Touch Tank”, at Squalicum Harbor and a scholarship of $500 has been set up.

The Bellingham Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers, is organizing our 11th annual Bellingham Salmon Derby, plus a Kids Derby, to be held July 10-12, 2015.  It will again take place at Squalicum Harbor in Bellingham and fishing will be in Marine Area 7. The awards ceremony will be held July 12th at the main boat launch area at Squalicum Harbor. We are inviting you to be a part of this very successful event!  Proceeds from the 2015 Bellingham Salmon Derby will be donated to local fish enhancement projects.

The Bellingham Chapter is pleased to announce that our derby will continue to be included in the 2015 NW Salmon Derby Series, which is promoted by the Northwest Marine Trade Association.  This is an important recognition for our derby, since the derbies are advertised throughout Oregon and Washington and north into British Columbia. You can visit their website at

Corporate sponsors are asked to donate $250 or more and will be prominently listed on our website and on our derby flyer, which will be distributed around the area and at boat and sportsmen shows to publicize the event.  Merchandise prizes as well as cash are welcome.  Your name will be listed on our advertising flyers and your company banner can be flown at our derby party at Squalicum Harbor. With every donation of $750 or more, you will receive 2 complimentary adult derby tickets, and with every donation of $1,000 or more you will receive 4 complimentary adult derby tickets.

A 22.56-pound chinook landed by Ben Truscott won the $5,000 first prize in this year's Bellingham Puget Sound Anglers Salmon Derby.

Truscott's salmon made the ladder late in the morning of Saturday besting by just over six ounces a king caught by Ryan Kies the previous day one of the annual three-day angling contest.

Kies fish, in turn, clung to the second place prize rung with a similar six plus ounce advantage over Guy Bertilson's third place fish, a 21.72-pound chinook. The two runner up fish garnered $2,500 and $1,000.

Winner of the PSA derby kid's division was Alex Davis, who posted a 17.12 pound salmon. P:arker Hanson and Patrick Mills took the second and third place prizes in the youth section with 14.98-pound and 13.12 pound fish, respectively.

Two hidden weight prizes of $500 each went to Joe Rude and Hunter Shaw for their 10.60- and 7.44-pound which came closest to the preselected secret qualifying weights.

This year's $500 Kathy Kaiser Memorial Award, given to chapter member landing the biggest salmon went to Aaron Jensen for a 16-pound chinook.

Four hundred tickets for this year's event were sold and contestants entered a total 152 salmon, and 25 in the kid's section.
